Built in the 1970s as part of the ambitious Idukki Hydropower Project, Cheruthoni Dam stands as a testament to Kerala’s progress in industrialization and sustainable development The project has three dams: Idukki Arch Dam, Cheruthoni Dam and Kulamavu Dam, with a combined storage capacity of 60 sq km.
The Cheruthoni Dam is a straight gravity concrete structure, 138 m (453 ft) high, and 650 m (2,133 ft) long. It was designed to connect to the Idukki Arch Dam by pumping water to the Mulmattom power plant. The electricity generated from this project meets a significant portion of Kerala’s energy needs, contributing to the state’s economic growth and infrastructure development.
