The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is the crown jewel of Thekkady. Spread over 925 square kilometres, the sanctuary lies in the Western Ghats and is a designated tiger sanctuary. Its rich ecosystem includes dense forests, rugged grasslands and a vibrant variety of flora and fauna.
Animals like tigers, leopards, sparrows, wild boars, various species of rhinos live there, and over 260 species of birds like Malabar gray horned rhinoceros, kingfisher, cormorants and others also attract the bird watchers.
