Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary: A Biodiversity Treasure in Kerala
This Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary lies deep into the Western Ghats, nestling in greenery. The sanctuary is a part of Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve and located near Thenmala in Kollam district of Kerala and covers an area of about 171 square kilometers. Historical Significance
The Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1984 and is one of the projects under the Thenmala Ecotourism Project, the first planned ecotourism destination of India. This sanctuary is on the banks of the Shenduruny River, dammed to create the Parappar Reservoir, or commonly known as the Thenmala Dam Reservoir. This makes the sanctuary not only a haven for its scenic beauty but also a lifeline for its flora and fauna.
The sanctuary has an interesting historical background; the presence of human settlements dates as far back as the Stone Age. Archaeological diggings at this site reveal parts of prehistoric artifacts. The cave paintings and microlithic tools were evident, which concludes that communities at this site must have existed thousands of years ago.
