Edakkal Caves: A Journey into Ancient History in Wayanad

Historical Significance and Petroglyphs
The Petroglyphs at Edakkal caves are significant and well-conditioned prehistoric carvings, among the most important found anywhere in India. They are a record of various motifs, including human figures, animals, and symbols-the carvings are only able to be partially understood; yet they are considered as early attempts by the human race to achieve communication, culture expression, and ritualistic practices.
The petroglyphs that are located in two panels at Edakkal were done over different times, probably by different groups of people over thousands of years. The motifs identified here are mostly geometrical: animals such as the elephant, tiger, and cattle; and what could be considered a human figure engaged in some kind of combat using some weapon. The subject matter implies existence of early human community affiliating itself with agricultural production, animal domestication, and hunting-providing an interesting view into the early Neolithic period.
